South West French Island was envisioned as a camp site open to paddlers of the Penobscot River, in Old Town, Maine.

This conception met with reality when the City pointed out that zoning code would not allow campsites on land zoned as residential.

The City is correct, and SWFI is no longer part of the Penobscot River Trail System.

SouthWest French Island remains a non-profit organization dedicated to providing access to the public to a beautiful spot on the Penobscot River. While the City of Old Town considers the details of our relationship, we want to remind the public that they are always invited to come to this part of French Island and enjoy the riverside experience.
